Important Update for all Kirby the Barber and Son customers

On September 10th 2022, Kirby "Poppa" Schimmels, father to Kirby the Barber (Sr.), grandfather to Kirby Jr, was killed by a tourist from India who ran a stop sign in a rental car. Poppa was on State HWY 385 in Nebraska on a solo motorcycle road trip up to the Black Hills South Dakota.

Due to the enormous hole left in our small family we will be splitting time between Austin and Houston. Mary Ellen, "Meema", wife of 57 years, wishes to remain in their home in Houston. We are committed to honoring them. Kirby Jr and I will be taking turns in splitting time between our family business in Austin and our family home in Houston. Poppa is also survived by his only child and son Kirby, grandson Kirby David and granddaughter's Madeline and Shylo Rayne.

The weeks / days that we are working in Austin are reflected on our schedules. We have set our schedules through the end of the year 2022. Schedule is subject, but not likely to change. Kirby Sr will tentatively be spending 1 long weekend and 1 full week per month in Houston. Kirby Jr's schedule will be updated on a monthly basis. Kirby Sr WILL NOT be accepting any new customers until next year. Kirby Jr is still accepting new customers at this time. We want our valued loyal customers to know that you are our priority over any new business. We will make every attempt to accommodate you in light of our new life routine.

Poppa was a professional driver holding a both a commercial drivers license and motorcycle endorsement and just recently passed his TXDOT physical. Half a million motorcycle miles in over 50 years riding, and many millions more OTR coast to coast. He was in exceptional health for a man of even half his age. He was an explorer and a walker, bit of a loner, yet an excellent talker. Lover of tai-chi, motorcycles and mother earth.

He took early retirement from the Airlines to spend more time with his grandkids and riding his motorcycle. He worked up until his death transporting school busses from the factory in North Carolina to a depot in Houston. He did this a week or two per month to finance his bike trips. He took them monthly, weekly as time and family commitments permitted. Many of you know of the epic road trips Kirby Jr took with Poppa to Yellowstone in 2021 and their Key West or Bust that busted in Destin, Florida just months ago. Poppa truly lived to ride, no truer words could be spoken. He was taken far too soon, with too many miles left unrode. His wishes were for his ashes be spread around the LBJ Ranch and the Pedernales about 15 years. We'll be taking him early. - Kirby the Barber (Sr)
